An International Conference at Faculty of Languages, Cultures and Communication
Friday, 31 May, 2024/ Tetovo, North Macedonia
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, representing the Faculty of Languages, Cultures, and Communication of South East European University, we are pleased to invite you to participate in an international conference on the theme “Languages, Cultures, and Communication: the Future of the Humanities and Social Sciences.” The Conference will take place on Friday, May 31, 2024, at South East European University in Tetovo, Macedonia.
This conference will focus on the many intersections of Languages, Cultures, and Communication, with particular emphasis on the difficult current situation in the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. Papers are sought addressing all aspects of these fields: anticipated topics include (but are not restricted to): methodological innovations; technology in the classroom and distance learning; curriculum modernisation; quality assurance in the humanities and social sciences; the virtues of language and cultural study in a multicultural world; redefining and refining learning outcomes; anticipating necessary skills in rapidly developing disciplines; and other associated topics.
Today the humanities and social sciences face unprecedented challenges, including reduced student enrolment, diminished research budgets, and indeed the closure of whole language programmes and language faculties. The worldwide popularity of STEM subjects has also lured many talented students away from the study of cultures, societies, the arts, and languages. At the same time, however, job seekers in widely varying fields are expected to have the language competence and cultural skills that are prioritized by language and social science programmes. As professionals vitally interested in the development and promotion of languages, translation, cultures, and sociology, we stand today at a crossroads in higher education: our specializations create skills that employers require and expect, yet institutional support for languages and cultural studies is declining in universities around the world. Paradoxically, this decline in support for language and cultural study is occurring at exactly the same time when technology is making even distant or obscure languages easier to access than ever before.
We therefore invite papers which address these contemporary challenges and opportunities in the broad fields of languages, cultures, and communications. The Conference Programme will include the presentation of research papers, a plenary session with an address by our keynote speaker, and several opportunities to exchange ideas in a relaxed social setting. The Conference is organized by the Faculty of Languages, Cultures and Communication at South East European University in Tetovo, North Macedonia.
